Verification Standards & Scientific Provenance
The native plant marketplace is rife with ambiguous labeling. Commercial retailers frequently market non-native ornamental cultivars, systemic pesticide-treated stock, or out-of-region germplasm under generic "pollinator-friendly" slogans. Below are the empirical standards required for inclusion in Native Plants Directory.
1. Nursery Location vs. Seed Provenance
A nursery’s physical mailing address indicates where seedlings were potted, not where the genetic seed was collected. For example, a nursery located in Pennsylvania might sell switchgrass seeds harvested from Texas, which will break dormancy too early and suffer severe frost damage in northern winters.
Native Plants Directory strictly differentiates Nursery Facility Location from Declared Seed Provenance. We require nurseries to explicitly disclose their wild seed collection protocols or maternal seed source radius.
2. Straight Native Species vs. Cultivars ("Nativars")
Straight native species are open-pollinated, genetically diverse wild types. Cultivars (often sold with trademarked marketing names in single quotation marks) are cloned mutations selected for petal color, dwarf stature, or leaf variegation. Multiple university studies have demonstrated that leaf chemical changes in variegated cultivars reduce insect folivore feeding, while double-flowered forms physically prevent bees from accessing nectar glands.
Nurseries listed in this directory specialize in or primarily offer straight open-pollinated native species propagated from local or regional wild genetics.
3. Strict Prohibition on Wild-Dug Stock
Unethical plant collectors occasionally poach native orchids, trilliums, ferns, and carnivorous plants directly from state parks, national forests, and roadside preserves. Native Plants Directory maintains a zero-tolerance policy for wild-collected live plants. All listed nurseries must propagate stock ethically through seed germination, licensed tissue culture, or division of established nursery mother stock.
4. Independent Verification Sources
Every listing in our directory is verified against third-party non-profit and governmental conservation registries, including:
- State Native Plant Societies: Virginia Native Plant Society (VNPS), Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT), California Native Plant Society (CNPS), Illinois Native Plant Society (INPS), Native Plant Society of Oregon (NPSO), Washington Native Plant Society (WNPS).
- USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS): Plant Materials Centers and cooperating foundation seed producers.
- Conservation Landscaping Coalitions: Chesapeake Conservation Landscaping Council, Wild Ones National, Chicago Wilderness Alliance.
